How to Set & Troubleshoot Your Landscape Lighting Timer

Customer Corner

Installing and enjoying landscape lighting is one of the best ways to enhance the beauty and security of your outdoor space. Whether you’ve recently installed a new lighting system or are looking to troubleshoot an existing setup, understanding how your landscape light transformer and timer function is essential.

In the video below, we walk through a step-by-step tutorial on how to operate your landscape lighting timer and make quick adjustments based on your needs—like for evening parties, seasonal changes, or overnight illumination.

Key Features of the Landscape Lighting System

  • Low Voltage Transformer
This system runs on low voltage, making it energy-efficient and cost-effective. The transformer plugs directly into a GFCI outlet and powers your outdoor landscape lights safely.
  • GFCI Outlet with Reset Buttons
If your landscape lights suddenly stop working, the first thing to check is the GFCI outlet. These outlets have reset buttons (usually labeled TEST and RESET) that may trip during a power surge or storm. Simply press the button to restore power.
  • On/Off Switch
Inside the transformer, a small toggle switch controls power to the system. Ensure it’s in the ON position for the timer and lighting to function correctly.

How to Set the Landscape Light Timer

Your transformer includes a mechanical timer dial that works like an old-school egg timer:

  • Day & Night Settings
The dial is divided into AM (white section) and PM (dark section). You can insert pins to set the times when you want the lights to turn ON and OFF.
  • Adjusting Light Schedules
Want the lights to turn on at 7:30 PM instead of 6:00 PM? Just move the ON pin to your desired time. Need them to stay on until 2:00 AM? Slide the OFF pin accordingly.
  • Manual Override Options
You can bypass the timer completely by unplugging the system from the timer and plugging it directly into the outlet. This is great for special occasions or overnight use.

Troubleshooting Tips

If your landscape lights aren’t working:

  1. Check the GFCI outlet – Press the reset button.
  2. Inspect the transformer switch – Make sure it’s in the ON position.
  3. Ensure the dial is powered – A power outage may stop the clock, throwing off your schedule.
  4. Check the timer pins – Make sure the ON/OFF pins are in the correct positions.

Why Proper Landscape Lighting Matters

Aside from enhancing curb appeal, landscape lighting improves safety and allows you to enjoy your outdoor areas after dark. By learning how to control your lighting transformer timer, you ensure your yard stays beautifully illuminated exactly when you want it.
