Prepare soil & thoroughly water after sod is placed. (Some may choose to pre-water before the sod is installed – which may also benefit the new rooting process.)
- For Best results, it is essential that the turf be watered when installed. Soak upon installation & water as needed to keep the new sod from drying out. Over watering for an extended period of time (after established) will severely damage the turf inducing disease and rotting roots. It usually takes 7 – 10 days during the active growing season for the sod to re-establish, but may take longer during cooler weather.
- Lifting a corner of the new sod piece & noting if “white” roots have connected to the ground can help to check for proper rooting. Mow the new sod 7 – 10 days after installation or when firmly rooted. (Mowing the new lawn before it is rooted can damage the new sod.)
- After installation – apply water when slight wilting is visible. Early morning and late afternoon watering is the most effective times and results in the least amount of water loss due to heat evaporation & the most water actually going into the sod and ground.
- To help establish the lawn – One inch of water per week is the rule of thumb during drought conditions for sandy loam soils which are common in South and Central Florida.
- Infrequent, thorough watering promotes healthy turf. Over watering encourages excessive growth and weak roots – leading to : disease, root rot, and will suffocate the turf.
- When automatic watering systems are used it is advised to install a rain sensor shutoff device to disarm the system when it rains.
- Again – early a.m. and late afternoon hours are the optimal time to irrigate new lawns. Night time regular watering is not suggested to establish your lawn.
